Let us tell you “About Us”
Organic Grounds is the vision of the Jeffer Family. We are Barry & Lee Ann and our sons, Cory, Colin and Tyler. We are originally from Bergen County, New Jersey (married in 1988) and relocated here to the Valley in 2003 when our youngest son was just a few months old. We have always been an eco-minded family, conservative yet outgoing, having a true love of nature and a reverence for our Creator.
We see Organic Grounds as a place to come, sit and enjoy a few moments out of your busy day. Let the kids enjoy a quick game, color a page or build a tower while you relax. Maybe you need a break from school, work or travel or just want to enjoy breakfast, lunch or an easy dinner in a relaxed atmosphere.
No time to ’sit’…no problem! The drive-thru offers almost everything inside (yes, we have the only drive-thru this side of town). You can also call ahead and order lunch for pick-up. We want you to enjoy the great taste of food and drink – even if you have to take it with you.
Organic Grounds is a family-owned business that wants to make the community a part of the family too!
WHAT IS ORGANIC GROUNDS ALL ABOUT?

Organic Grounds isn’t just about organic food (although we have plenty!). It’s about HOW we conduct business and WHAT our philosophy is.
We use eco-friendly packaging for all our drink & to-go containers, even the ice cream sundae cups – what does this mean? This means that the cup or container you get from us is made from biodegradable materials that won’t sit in a landfill for hundreds of years. It means we are taking part in the responsibility of preserving our natural resources.
We recycle everything from plastic to aluminum to cardboard. We serve with actual dishes and flatware and wash them with biodegradable detergent- this means we are not adding to the contaminants in the water. We clean with biodegradable solvents.
When a light bulb goes out, it’s replaced with an LED bulb that will conserve over 75% energy and last 10 years or more, thereby reducing greenhouse gases. Even the company sign on the building is lit with LED lights (actually, the only one in the complex which does this), again saving over 75% in energy usage and a third usage in kilowatt hours. (This mean the other signs cost about $3-4 per day to be lit whereas our costs about 50 cents).
We are actively searching for local artists for our Art Gallery/Meeting Room. This enables others to enjoy the vast amount of local talent we have here in the Valley.
We stock breads from Sharon Payne, a local Harrisonburg Farmer’s Market baker We use fresh roasted coffee from Troy Lucas, Lucas Roasting Company. We have handcrafted cards from Erin and Ashley and jewelry from Beth. There is an abundance of local eco-materials, magazines and information plus books on everyday eco-living.
Organic Grounds. The name came about for two reasons. Organic because that’s how we as a family live our life; organic, healthy and natural foods (even “non-organic” foods are healthy if your ingredients are natural). Grounds represents the ‘grounds we live on’ (and yes, coffee grounds!) and it’s each of our responsibilities to take care, preserve and yes, enjoy!
Being ‘organic’ is a lifestyle, NOT just a catchy buzz-word. It’s about HOW you live and WHAT you do to help yourself and others. It’s about teaching your children what’s right and good. It’s about you and the difference even just one person can make.
We’re proud to be ORGANIC GROUNDS. We hope you are too.
